As a young child, I was always "cat-curious." I would chase cats, pick them up, pet them incorrectly, and in exchange, they did not like me. People would act as though adopting a cat as a single person was the kiss of death, no one would love you, you would treat them like a child, and in general freak people out.
Michael Showalter changed that for me. In Guys Can Be Cat Ladies Too, he showed me that my feelings were acceptable. He taught me how not to irritate cats (as I did as a child). Now, I have two wonderful feline friends, and honestly, the ladies love them. Heck, even the gentlemen love them. Everyone loves these cats. It turns out they're adorable and quite popular on the Internet as well. I'm not ostracized at all! Thank you, Michael Showalter, for allowing me to be the man I was born to be: a cat lady.

I'm pretty up on my Beatles history, but on page 122 of "Guys Can Be Cat Ladies Too" comedian Michael Showalter reveals in a "Fun Fake Cat Fact" the truth about the feline rhythm section predating Ringo's arrival, naturally leading me to wonder, did the cat play on the first recorded version of "Love Me Do"? Clearly from the product description ("Why are they all aloof and weird and stuff?"; "They hate me, right?") you know this is going to be one of Showalter's prize pieces of occasionally nigh-surreal humor. Starting with the basics ("What is a cat?"; "What is not a cat?") Showalter takes guys through the stages of welcoming one of these complicated, elusive, reclusive, mysterious, and hilarious animals into their lives. There are practical tips on cats cohabitating with other cats, with dogs, and even frogs: "Unless your cat is a Louisiana frog cat, cats mostly don't even know what a frog is or that they exist, so don't stress about this one too much." Note: It turns out that one of my cats is a Louisiana frog cat, and has great cognizance of the existence of frogs. (I just keep him inside and away from the pond.)
Cats are great pets and Showalter nailed it with this book for men who share their home with these bizarre creatures. As a concluding thought, please always remember Showalter's sage advice: it's fine to massage your cat (Swedish cat massage is best,) but under no circumstances should you attempt a bro hug. I recommend this book to cat lovers (and particularly male cat lovers) everywhere.
